Francisco Ayala wins Templeton 2010
Evolutionary geneticist, molecular biologist and former monk Francisco Ayala was selected for the Templeton 2010 prize for his championing of the separation of science and religion.
But where does Ayala stand on evolution? On the one hand, he strongly opposes the teaching of creationism alongside evolution; he has refuted creationism and intelligent design in favor of Darwin’s theory of...

Stuff English people like... →
No problem! This site is pretty funny.
hithisisdanielle:
Thank you markellision, for introducing me to http://englishpeoplelike.com/
It really sums up the interesting people expats just happen to share this place with. The mixer taps, oh sweet jesus the mixer taps and instant coffee and single paned windows.
I’d add “avoiding grammar & spelling” and denouncing people who know the proper...

Tesco director: British school leavers 'can't read... →
So British people can’t read or write, but they’re getting higher grades than ever. Going to submit this to http://englishpeoplelike.com/ as “pushing kids through the system” or something.
hithisisdanielle:
“Despite many A Level students and university graduates not being able to read or write or understand maths, more were achieving better results.
And she...

Friday Love: Borough Market
Borough Market is one of the three reasons one should ever venture south of the Thames River (the other two being to see a film at BFI Southbank or to visit any of your friends who happen to live all the way down there). Borough Market is not that far away from wherever you live and you will be rewarded with Spanish chorizo sandwiches, enormous strawberries, hot apple cider, perfectly ripe...

Thursday Hate: Drivers who disrespect cyclists
Nothing gets my adrenaline flowing fiercer than a disrespectful driver. Just last night a driver turned across oncoming traffic (i.e. me) and threw up his arms in disgust. As I had the right of way, and a collision, while probably fatal to me, would merely put a dent in his door, I can only guess his anger was due to the fact that cyclists exist.
I can manage my hormones a little better when I...

Internet 'in running' for Nobel Peace Prize →
Did anyone else read this as a headline from the Onion?
techspotlight:
The internet is among a record 237 individuals and organisations nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The number of nominations surpasses last year’s record of 205 nominations. The Gillette Myth
Despite apparent technical advances in mens’ grooming implements over the last 40 years, most men in the world still use old school safety razors like the one represented in the schematic above. Jennifer reminds me of the research she did before buying me my last birthday present: it’s pretty much just America and Western Europe that use multiple blade “shaving systems”...

Thursday Hate: Long emails that say absolutely...
I blogged before about corporate gibberish and I must say, this problem just keeps coming up. Perhaps people feel guilty about writing short emails, as if it’s being rude or it shows you haven’t spent much time thinking about the topic at hand. When in fact, it’s just the opposite. Clear, concise emails are things of beauty. They show the recipient that you have indeed considered...
