An “external cause of death” refers to death resulting from accident or violence, and just over 20% of such deaths in the United Kingdom are caused by cars, trucks, buses, heavy transport vehicles and other two- and three-wheeled motor vehicles. Stats include not only pedestrians and cyclists injured in collisions with motor vehicles, but also drivers and passengers injured in vehicle-on-vehicle accidents.
The other 80% is mostly caused by falls, poisoning, and other accidents.
