Do you like living in syria? Tell the truth please!
I'm syrian, both my parents are from Damascus, But i live in maryland in the usa.
Anyway, It makes me so happy that someone is interested in visiting the place i am from, and caring enough to learn the language.
Where in Sham do you live?
Can you speak arabic or not so much? Doesnt matter though, because learning to read and write is hard enough! I go to arabic school every sunday.. but its more like a social gathering rather than a school.

Yes, I do like it. It’s been nice being a student again. Living in Syria is quite different from the UK, as expected. The biggest difference, besides the obvious language thing, is the pace of life here. I wouldn’t necessarily say that life has a slower pace because sometimes things can be quite hectic or urgent. Rather, it’s an overall more disorganized or inexact life; you’re never completely sure of where you must go to get things done, or how to get there, or how long it will take, etc. We’ve learned that things do eventually work themselves out, but the process is always an adventure — registering for classes, for example.

There are also some funny things about Syrian culture that I don’t think I’ll understand for a while. Young people’s behavior in the movie theater is really something else…. although I’ve been told this happens in other Arab countries as well :)

Arabic lessons are going well and I find myself using the language more and more in public without even thinking. I enjoy writing a lot and can read on paper a lot faster than I can read out loud. Maybe that’s normal. I live in an area called Muhajirin. Check out the view here and here!
